Fast Microbiology Contamination Testing

Breweries and Cider Mills are our largest market sector. CENTEC sensors are used worldwide to monitor a wide range of liquids and gases, from wort, juices, yeast and water, CO2 and O2 through to finished products. Allowing beer and cider producers of consistently high quality everyday.  Speedy Breedy the rapid microbiology detector provides essential early warning of water and product contamination.

ABER Live Yeast Cell Monitors ‘Cell Counters’ are highly respected. They greatly improve fermentation consistency, flavour profiles and product quality for many major and highly successful breweries. While CENTEC sensors monitor wort concentrations and oxygen levels, thereby optimising the fermentation conditions. There are numerous applications where CENTEC and ABER equipment can be used to significantly improve process performance as well as beer and cider quality.

CENTEC also produce a range of process skids for water, beer and cider processing, pre-assembled for quick installation and operation.

CENTEC SONATEC TR sensors very accurately measure the speed of ultrasound through a liquid, this correlates to concentration, gravity, plato etc. Mount in-line for fast response and easy cleaning. Data is display in various concentration units as w/w%, °Plato, °Brix. In breweries external wort evaporation can monitored. Data outputs include Analogue (4-20 mA), Profibus DP signal and set-point with Digital contacts for alarms or process control. ‘Product Select’ functions enable product specific configuration. SONATEC TR can also be used as fluid ‘interface detectors’ to determine a change of the liquid passing through a pipe, e.g. between Beer and Water, Yeast and Beer, Wort and CIP, etc. SONATEC HW like SONATEC TR also determines concentration by measuring ultrasound velocity. The HW is mounted into the wall of a vessel or a wort boiler, making it ideal for monitoring a process such as evaporation, batch dilution, dissolving or for product inspection. A CIP spray nozzle and sample point are offered as an options, especially useful for wort boiling.

CENTEC RHOTEC TR - An on-line device for accurately determining concentration by measuring small changes in density using a high frequency oscillation U tube. RHOTEC can very accurately measure the density of wort. When blending high gravity beer and other ingredients RHOTEC TR allows very close process control. ‘Product Select’ allows product specific configuration. PT1000 temperature compensation allows from close control, even during variable process conditions.

CENTEC COMBITEC TR combines SONATEC sound velocity with RHOTEC density measurement. This is used with products in which three suitable ingredients are being monitored as the same time e.g. alcoholic drinks. A special algorithm uses the data to determine Alcohol Content (%ABV) in a drink and Original Gravity.

CENTEC OXYTRANS measures the oxygen content both dissolved in liquids such as DAL (Deaerated Liquor / Water) and in beer, cider etc and in mixed gases such as O2 in ‘dirty CO2 ‘ from fermenters. In liquids OXYTRANS measures down to 1 ppb using the reliable principle of quenched optical luminescence, which has the added advantage of requiring very low maintenance.

Before pitching cooled wort should be correctly aerated for optimum yeast performance. OXYTRANS is perfect aeration control

CENTEC CARBOTEC TR-PT in-line sensors measure the dissolved gas content of carbonated drinks. A small sample of product is taken every 20 seconds and decompressed by a known volume, during which time changes in pressure and temperature are accurately monitored. The sample returns to the line. The sensor head is CIPable.

ABER COMPACT and ADAPT in-line yeast monitors and CLYA laboratory yeast analysers measure minute change in capacitance and fluid conductivity to determine the concentration of viable cells in a yeast slurry. COMPACT 410P, ADAPT 410PV and CLYA are the very latest and the most robust in a series of superb monitoring sensors which Aber Instruments first developed over 25 years ago.  ABER yeast measuring equipment can greatly improve the quality and consistency of YEAST PITCHING, FERMENTATION, CROPPING and CONDITIONING. Result: Better beers and ciders with more consistent flavour.

ABER COMPACT LAB YEAST ANALYSER is the most advanced bench-top live yeast cell analysers available for use in brewery laboratories. Once calibrated, CLYA accurately, quickly and importantly consistently ‘counts’ the concentration of viable cells in a 40 ml sample. It is far easier, faster and more reliable than traditional manual counting.

Specialist Instrumentation for Beer and Cider Production

CENTEC TR Transmitters are used on Centec sensors. Inside their robust IP65 housings they receive data from the sensor transducers and process it into useful information for local display and for transmission as both analogue, digital, Profibus DP signals for communication with process control systems and other devices. TR Transmitters are stand alone devices, requiring only a 24V DC supply. A LCD screen displays values locally, or remotely as required, or via a process HMI. Easily programmable ‘Product Select’ allows customers to configure the instrument to suit their preferred unique parameters and alarm set-points for a large number of  different products, which can be selected manually or automatically via PLC.

Speedy Breedy - Consumer protection is essential for all drinks producers. It is part of food safety legislation in most countries. Fast and effective detection and elimination of microbial contamination is vital, especially in a brewery. Anaerobic spoilage bacteria and undesirable wild yeasts for example are a constant threat, leading to yeast stock contamination, poor flavour, waste, disappointed customers, damaged reouration and extra costs.

Speedy Breedy is easy & quick to use. Available 24/7 and needing minimal training, process operators or lab technicians can set-up a test to check infection. If present, early indications of contamination can often be detected in just a few hours. An alarm email can be sent automatically to key personnel. Significantly faster and more pro-active than traditional agar plates. Testing and authenticated by Campden BRI

Quickly test for general contamination or for specific organisms, using selective media inside automatically controlled totally sealed 50 ml test vessels, e.g.: Lactobacillus spp., Pediococcus spp. & Wild Yeast and more…

…all micro-organisms tested in this project were detectable by Speedy Breedy…. particularly advantageous for the detection of anaerobic organisms such as lactic acid bacteria for which detection normally requires 5-7 days. Speedy Breedy allowed detection of Lactobacillus brevis and Pediococcus damnosus within 27-38 hours (at a concentration of ~2,000 cells/ml). This new methodology was also found to be very sensitive and able to detect very low cell concentrations (2-5 bacterial cells/ml)”.
